President Donald Trump could outline his administration's infrastructure plan during his State of the Union address Jan. 30. Details are still scarce, but Reuters explains how the $200 billion in federal money could be allocated among "American Spirit" and rural projects, loan programs and cost-sharing infrastructure work with states.
The sale of robots in North America was up 14% in the first nine months of 2017, but automation additions to manufacturing are not the only trend. PPG Industries, a manufacturer of vehicle coatings, is designing a paint for autonomous vehicles that will make it easier for sensors to detect dark-colored cars. The coating will permit near-infrared light from lasers to move through a dark car's exterior layer of paint, then bounce back from a reflective undercoating for more visibility to sensors.

States have increasingly turned to tolls to raise revenue, and that could increase if the Trump administration puts more emphasis on local revenue for its infrastructure legislation. "I think 2018 is going to be a very good year for tolling," says Pat Jones, executive director of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association.
Some drivers without E-ZPass transponders say they haven't received bills for using the thruway in New York, and the New York State Thruway Authority is working with its vendors to remedy the situation. The problem has also led the authority to offer an amnesty program that begin Monday.
The State Road and Tollway Authority in Georgia won the 2017 Georgia Transit Association performance award. The authority opened the state's first reversible toll lane on Interstate 75 last year and played a role in helping to reopen Interstate 85 after a section of it collapsed.
The Cobequid Pass in Nova Scotia was created 20 years ago to reduce traffic deaths, and people testifying at a public hearing praised the success of the only toll road in the province. Tolls have helped maintain the road, which will be paid off in 2019-20, years ahead of schedule.
